Meghan Markle Profile

Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, complete name is Rachel Meghan Markle. She was born on August 4th, 1981, and was an American actress who became a member of the British royal family upon her marriage to Prince Harry. She was born and raised in Los Angeles, California.

Her mother, Doria Ragland is a social worker and yoga instructor and lives in View Park–Windsor Hills, California. Her father, Thomas Markle Sr., is a retired television director of photography and lives in Rosarito, Mexico. She has two older paternal half-siblings, Samantha Markle and Thomas Markle Jr. Markle’s parents divorced when she was six years old.

Meghan grew up in Hollywood and was raised as a Protestant. She was educated at private schools. At age 11, she run a successful campaign to get Procter & Gamble to change a national television commercial she viewed as sexist.

She went to college at Northwestern University, where she joined Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and participated in community service and charity projects. Markle graduated from Northwestern’s School of Communication in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree and a double major in theater and international studies. She served an internship at the American embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and studied for a semester in Madrid, Spain.

While working as an intern at the US Embassy in Argentina she briefly thought that her path might lead her into politics, but she changed course when her acting career began to take off.

While she was studying at Northwestern University, she began playing small roles in TV Series and movies. Her more prominent role was the one she played at Suits, as Rachel Zane, between 2011 and 2017. While working on Suits, Markle lived in Toronto, where the show was filmed. She lived in Canada for nine months each year, and moved out in late November 2017 after work on the seventh season had been completed.

From 2014 to 2017, she was founder and editor-in-chief of the lifestyle website The Tig, which she later closed in April 2017.

She is an outspoken feminist, she has represented international charity organizations in the 2010s and has received recognition for her fashion and style. Furthermore, her media career has gone hand-in-hand with support for causes that are close to her heart. She tackled the issue about menstrual health in an article for Time Magazine in 2017 and was a Global Ambassador for World Vision Canada, campaigning for better education, food and healthcare for children around the world. As part of her role, she travelled to Rwanda for the charity’s Clean Water Campaign. Meghan’s commitment to gender equality has seen her work with the United Nations, and she received a standing ovation from an audience including UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon for a speech on International Women’s Day 2015.

Megan’s marriage with Prince Harry isn’t her first one. In September 2011, she wed actor and producer Trevor Engelson, and divorced two years later.

Markle’s engagement to Prince Harry was announced on November 27, 2017 by Clarence House and Kensington Palace. The ring Harry gave Markle was made by Cleave & Company Ltd., and consists of a large central diamond from Botswana, with two smaller diamonds from the jewelry collection of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales.

Following the engagement, Markle announced she would retire from acting, deleted all of her social media accounts, and began the process of becoming a British citizen. In preparation for the wedding, the Archbishop of Canterbury, baptized Markle and confirmed her into the Church of England on March 6, 2018. The marriage ceremony was held on May 19, 2018, at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.

They live at Nottingham Cottage in London, in the grounds of Kensington Palace. They are expecting their first child in 2019. The child will be seventh in line to the throne. After the birth they will move to Frogmore Cottage in Home Park, in the grounds of Windsor Castle, but their office will continue to operate at Kensington Palace.

Whatever we think of her new job requirements, Markle will remain a working woman with a lifetime of public performances ahead. Every word, every gesture, every detail of dress will be scrutinized and read for subtext.
